Meals - Southern Food That Goes Together

If you have not spent a lot of time in the South, you may find making a complete Southern meal a little confusing. What goes together? If you were cooking Chinese, you know Chow Mien and pizza do not go together. But what goes together for a Southern meal?

Well, we are going to tell you.

There are many combinations of dishes that work together, but we are going to present the most common, most popular here. They are listed by the dish's main ingredient, generally some form of meat.

With the following meat main courses, serve any combination of the listed dishes (i.e., not all the dishes):

Pork (Fried pork chops or oven baked)

Your Choice of:
Fried Potatoes
Green Beans
Boiled Corn on the cob
Greens (Collards, Mustard or Turnip Greens)
Cole Slaw
Fried Green Tomatoes
Fried Okra
Black Eyed Peas
Fresh Vegetable Plate (radishes, baby green onions, celery sticks, cucumber slices)
Required:
Southern Cornbread
Sweet Southern Iced Tea

Fish Fry (Fried Catfish or other fish)

Your Choice of:
Cole Slaw
Fried Potatoes
Boiled Corn on the Cob
Potato Salad
Required:
Hushpuppies
Sweet Southern Iced Tea

Southern Fried Chicken

Same as Pork

Barbecue (Beef, Pork or Chicken)

Your Choice of:
Sorghum Baked Beans
Boiled Corn on the Cob
Southern Cornbread
Hushpuppies
Mint Juleps
Required
Cole Slaw

These are just a few of the more popular Southern meals. Of course, you can serve anything you want with any of them, but we have tried to illustrate what is traditionally served together.

Just to repeat, you should serve any combination of the listed dishes...not all of them, with the meat main course. Unless you are feeding the entire Green Bay Packers football team...
