This recipe may be a challenge for new cooks but should not be difficult for experienced cooks. It is flexible, in that additional ingredients may be added if desired. Specifically, additional dried, candied fruit, such as pineapple or lemon peel may be added.
The bourbon is used for flavor but if you object to using it you may substitute water. However, be aware that the alcohol boils off during baking and there is no significant alcohol in the cake.
